Two brothers, Enoch and James Taylor, moved their iron working from Goodall's Yard in Brougham Road to Carrs Road where they had built a residence, Ready Carr House, and an Iron Foundry. Important additions and alterations were subsequently made to the original structures over the years and iron manufacturing premises eventually extended to the far end of Carrs Road at the crossroads with Ottiwells Bridge. Sykes notes that by 1906 "the firm is now dissolved".

Sorting rags for shoddy production

John Edward Crowthers took over part of the iron foundry buildings and used it to create a shoddy business where rags were shredded and yarn was produced by the carbonisation of the waste material.

Rags used to be bought by rag-and-bone men collecting them throughout residential areas and sold to rag mill owners.
